The Picture of a Malagan Retailer in Veracruz: Tomás Murphy Porro
During the last years of 18th century Veracruz was a major centre of comercial activity. Many facts happened at this period: the moderninization of Spanish trade legislation over its American possessions, the Spanish war, the appearance of new social groups and the constitution of Caribbean market. Consequently a powerful mercantile community of foreigners was settled down in Veracruz. One of them was Tomás Murphy Porro, an Spanish man of Irish descent, who settled down there as a manager of the family company in 1791. This article shows an outline of Muyrphy’s life. It describes his early years, his live in Veracruz and his career as a business man. Because of that he became a well known merchant in Veracruz, during the last years of the Spanish Empire in Veracruz.
