Lo que quedó tras la crisis del café: migración y manejo de recursos naturales en el centro de Veracruz
Resumen
What was Left after the Coffee Crisis: Migration and the Management of Natural Resources in the Centre of Veracruz
The coffee production crisis in Central Veracruz (México) has been considered one of the main detonators of increasing migration flows to the United States. One of the consequences of this exodus has been the shortage of labour to work in the fincas. In addition, it has been reported that scarce quantities of remittances are invested in productive practices or land purchase. Taking these circumstances into account, the document analyses the hidden benefits of coffee production for women harvesters for whom this income becomes their “guardadito” or “piggy-bank” which they generally can control. On this basis, sustainable practices are considered as an alternative to migration and as an option to cannel remittances in a way that makes possible the reactivation of local development and expands participation options for social sectors that have been frequently marginalised by rural development policies, as in the case of women.
